School Safety Discussion On Deck for Board of Education Meeting

Superintendent Eric Knost says adding more police officers to patrol schools is an option for increasing school security.

Superintendent Eric Knost said he plans to open a conversation about school safety at the first Mehlville School District Board of Education meeting of 2013 on Jan. 10. Protecting students and teachers from violent threats became a nationwide focus in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook shootings in Newtown, CT, where a lone gunman killed 26 people, mostly children. “It can happen anywhere, and you want to make sure you’re doing the most you can so it won’t happen,” Knost said. One option for Mehlville schools is to hire more police officers, especially to patrol elementary schools. The district currently employs seven school resource officers, one at each high school and middle school, but the officers stationed at middle schools also each …

School Officials Reject Idea of Arming Teachers at Safety Meeting

Law enforcement and school district officials said a meeting of the Safe Schools Partnership Program Thursday morning produced meaningful discussions on other ways to prevent a repeat of the tragic school shooting in Connecticut last week.

Law enforcement and school district officials said a meeting of the Safe Schools Partnership program Thursday morning produced meaningful discussions about ways the two groups can work together to improve safety at St. Louis-area schools in the wake of last week’s tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. “It was a very frank and open conversation between law enforcement and school officials about what can we do, what else can we do,” St. Louis County Police Department Chief Tim Fitch said in an interview with Patch after the meeting, which involved police departments and school districts from across the St. Louis area. Fitch made national headlines earlier this week when he put forward the idea of arming school officials as a way of …

Also, by that logic, we should restrict schools from having fire extinguishers and leave it to the fire fighters. I want every line of defense possible to be available for the protection of my children.   more ›

Oakville Residents Should Leave Fireworks Displays to the Experts

The use of fireworks is against the law in St. Louis County, but it is permitted in Franklin, Jefferson and St. Charles counties.

If you live in Oakville and were planning to hold your own fireworks display to celebrate the Fourth of July, you may want to think twice. That’s because the sale, use and possession of fireworks in St. Louis County is illegal. “The ban also includes all 91 municipalities included within the county,” said Mac Scott, a county spokesperson. “Violation of the law could cost between $50 and $1,000. The fee is at the discretion of the judge.” Rick Eckhard, a spokesman for the St. Louis County Police Department, said his office steps up patrols around the holiday and typically receives an increased number of calls regarding the use of fireworks. Eckhard did not have any statistics on the number of tickets handed out for fireworks violations. “…

Outstanding in Oakville: Patty Crocker

Patty Crocker grew up with Jefferson Barracks almost in her backyard, and today she volunteers her time to keep it beautiful and safe.

As Patty Crocker was growing up, she spent many hours playing in and walking the paths of Jefferson Barracks Park. “When we were children, my friends and I used to enjoy sitting on the bluff of the Mississippi River near the old train depot and waving at the people in the boats down on the river,” said Crocker. “The park was my backyard. I always loved being there. As I grew older I became even more interested in the rich history of Jefferson Barracks.” Today, Crocker works for the Mehlville School District in the facilities building located in the old post hospital building. In front of her desk is a collage of photos of Jefferson Barracks. “I like to know how things became as they are now. The building that I work in was built in 1905-…

National Playground Safety Week Under Way

This week schools and families focus on children’s outdoor play equipment.

I will never forget the day at first grade recess when my crush, Ryan, fell off the highest rung of the jungle gym. Our teacher, Mrs. Anderson, grabbed him and ran carrying him into the building. Ryan was bleeding profusely from his head. I was instantly traumatized. Never one to climb on anything as a child, I had been sitting on the sidelines with my best friend Jenny. I am glad I wasn’t sitting any closer to the action, as a couple of days Ryan came back with stitches in his head. Ryan transferred schools that year and I never saw him again, but I will always remember him as the boy who split his head open on the concrete playground. A lot has changed since my days on the playground (I will not reveal what year that was). However, more …

Michelle I can't agree with you more. We walk to Bee Tree from our house ALL the time and in the past few years the playground has been on the decline. We are not particulary found of the "rocks' either but at least there was a slide for the older kids at one time. I LOVE this park and wish the playground was up to par with the other Parks in St. Louis County.   more ›
