The following message was posted on the Mehlville School District Facebook page: A Message from Superintendent Dr. Eric D. Knost: We are saddened to share the following news regarding one of our teachers. Yesterday evening we were informed of the very sudden passing of Mrs. Kathy Rausch, second grade teacher at Wohlwend Elementary School. Kathy has been with the Mehlville School District for a number of years, serving as a teacher at Wohlwend and previously Forder. The coming days will be especially difficult for Kathy's family, the Wohlwend students and community, and many staff members and friends who knew her personally. Let's support all of these people with our thoughts and prayers as Wohlwend works through this very tragic loss. …

Oakville Man Receives Reward for Finding Missing Child

An Oakville postal worker found a missing child from Wohlwend Elementary School.

An Oakville postal worker received an award Wednesday after he found a missing child from Wohlwend Elementary School. On Feb. 25 2011, Ray made his daily mail stop at the school and learned that an autistic boy had been reported missing from the playground. The 30-year postal veteran assisted in the search and found the child at a nearby chapel, curled up for warmth. Ray alerted the police and the child was safely returned to his family. For his actions, the U.S. Department of Justice honored Ray with the Missing Children’s Day Citizen Award. Deputy Attorney General James Cole awarded Ray at the National Missing Children’s Day commemoration in the Justice Department’s Great Hall Wednesday. “Protecting children is one of the most important …

Music Teacher Brings Brazil to Wohlwend Elementary

The students held a special concert and parade in honor of Carnival.

Rich samba and bossa nova beats echoed through the halls of Wohlwend Elementary Monday as the school's second graders hosted a Brazilian musical concert.  Music teacher Renato Durante said he was inspired to bring the Brazilian culture to his students after seeing the movie "Rio." The children sang in Portuguese, performing three songs in front of family and friends. "Portuguese is quite a different language from Spanish," Durante said. "Even for me, it was challenging, but kids at that age are able to pick up it quicker." After the concert, the second-graders paraded around the school in true Carnival fashion. Students from other grades lined the hallways in masks they had made. A St. Louis-based world percussion ensemble, called Joia, …

JDRF Recognizes Oakville Family

Eight-year-old Brooke Yost, who has Type 1 diabetes, builds a bigger Walk to Cure Diabetes team each year.

Two years ago, Brooke Yost was a normal, spunky 5-year-old attending Wohlwend Elementary School in Oakville. And then one night, everything changed. Brooke’s mom, Deb, and dad, Mark, had no one in their family with Type 1 diabetes, so they didn't know to look out for anything particular. Life was going about as normal. “The Saturday before Halloween she wet her bed. Later that night she wet her bed again, and it was excessive,” Deb said “She went to the bathroom and gulped a whole glass of water. The next day she was still drinking a lot.” By Monday morning, the Yost’s took Brooke to the doctor, thinking she may have had a bladder infection. Before they knew it they were packing their bags for a stay at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital…

Mehlville Schools Host Ceremonies To Remember Sept. 11

Each school in the district had an assembly, or thanked first responders in some way.

Most students at Trautwein Elementary School were not alive when two planes struck the World Trade Center on Sept. 11 one decade ago. That’s not to say they don’t know about the attack, or haven’t been affected by its consequences. These kids grew up in a post-terrorist world, hearing about the events of that day at least once a year. They grew up with the Iraq War, Operation Enduring Freedom and the death of Osama bin Laden. In honor of 9/11, Trautwein students held a ceremony Friday outside the school. They invited members of the Mehlville Fire Protection District, St. Louis County Police and the National Guard to hear patriotic songs and raise the flag to half-mast. Students and schools across the Mehlville School District donated $1 to…

Residents Petition Bethesda for School Traffic Signal Reimbursement

Oakville citizens want the senior center to chip in for a traffic light built in August.

Almost 300 residents have signed an online petition to ask Bethesda Health Group to kick in funds for a traffic light that has gone up at the entrance of Oakville Middle and Wohlwend Elementary School. The signal, which became active in early August, was part of a four-year effort to make the schools’ intersection safer for its approximately 160 employees and 1,124 students. Oakville residents Donna Seidel and Rosemary Nagy spearheaded the endeavor after they had success in petitioning for a full-time signal in front of Point Elementary in 2008. Unlike the signal at Oakville Middle School, the Point signal was already in place and just needed to operate throughout the day, rather than at school start and end times.  “This was going to be a…
