Here are a few of the most talked about conversation starters we had in 2012.
One of our favorite features here at Patch is the Conversation Starter series, which poses a topical question to readers each and every Sunday. There was no shortage of chatter amongst readers this year. Here are some of the most talked about conversation starters we had in 2012. What Can Schools Do to Boost Security for Students? A couple of days after the grim news of a shooter killing at least 20 children and at least seven others at a Newtown, CT, elementary school, we knew that police locally have beefed up patrols around St. Louis County elementary schools. As a parent, I think nothing of sending my child off to school every day. We just cannot wrap our heads around the thought of teachers, who should be explaining the three R's, …

Following the tragic school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT, should we expect to see stricter laws regarding gun purchases in the United States?
The question reemerges after every mass shooting in America: are more stringent gun control laws necessary to prevent future shootings? It's a question that was posed after the shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, CO in July. And as the national conversation continues to focus on the tragic school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT, it's a question being asked again. So far, lawmakers in Missouri have been divided on how to respond. As KMOX reported on Thursday, Rep. Stacey Newman (D-Richmond Heights) is calling for the implementation of required background checks for people who buy firearms at gun shows. Meanwhile, other Missouri lawmakers are supporting a bill that would allow school officials with concealed carry …

Legislation is being prepared to ban assault-style weapons, and President Obama says he wants to make the issue "central" to his second term.
With the national conversation centering on gun control legislation following the tragic school shooting in Newtown, CT, and the National Rifle Association scheduling a press conference Friday to weigh in on the issue, weapons of all sorts are flying off the shelves in local gun stores. Affton's Mid America Arms is typically busy this time of year, but not this busy, according to Marketplace Morning Report. "It's been one of our best days in history of 13 years, but not for the right reasons," owner Mark Campbell said to Marketplace Morning Report. "The walls are pretty much picked through of any kind of paramilitary rifle." Shoppers are worried those rifles, as well as high-capacity magazines, could soon be prohibited. "We're busier now …

The St. Louis area represents both extremes in the debate in a single week.
There's no way to avoid it. The gun control debate re-emerges with every shooting like the one on Friday morning in Aurora, CO: A man kills 12 and wounds more than 50 in a movie theater at a premiere of the latest Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises." On one end of the gun debate, Missouri Rep. John McCaherty (R-90th District), of High Ridge, is set to raffle off the civilian version of the military M16 rifle at a fundraising dinner Aug. 27. The rifle is a legally owned AR15 rifle that was given to him by the NRA. Meanwhile, on the other end of the debate over guns — legal or otherwise — only two mayors in the area have joined Mayors Against Illegal Guns: St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay and University City Mayor Shelley Welsch. (It should be…
