Where and Why of Recycling Batteries and Light Bulbs on Earth Day Batteries Plus of Chesterfield Helps Promote Environmental Awareness [St.Louis, MO] – STOP! Don’t throw away that old battery or light bulb– recycle! On Earth Day, April 21,2012, Batteries Plus will recycle old rechargeable batteries and compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) for free at Chesterfield Amphitheater, 631 Veterans Place Dr, Chesterfield MO.  A pound’s worth of Alkaline batteries, per family, will also be accepted. Promoting recycling throughout the community is part of Batteries Plus’ commitment to our environment. Batteries Plus – the largest U.S retail chain focused on the expanding $30.7 billion battery category and now the premier source for light bulbs -- also accepts batteries and light bulbs for recycling at their seven area locations. Why recycle? Everyone uses batteries. Whether in a cellular or cordless phone, camcorder, power tools, portable electronic products or a car – batteries are used daily. The same reasoning hits home all the more when it comes to light bulbs. Open a door to your home, your car, your work, even your refrigerator, and a light goes on. Multiply this battery and lamp usage by the number of people on the planet, and the by-product that could end up in a landfill is staggering. Recycling batteries and light bulbs Stops harmful chemicals and hazardous metals from contaminating the soil and water Reduces waste in our landfills. Preserves our environment by decreasing the need for new raw materials. “So many people throw away batteries and light bulbs without knowing they have the ability to recycle them or even recharge them,” said Steve Donnell, owner of Batteries Plus stores in Creve Coeur, Ballwin, Chesterfield, South County, Florissant, St. Peters and in Fairview Heights, IL. “We can always recycle batteries and light bulbs, but on Earth Day, we will recycle batteries for free to help promote recycling awareness within the Chesterfield community." The Batteries Plus recycling goal is to produce a positive impact on our environment by recovering and recycling more than it sells. As the nation’s leader in battery recycling, Batteries Plus locations offer recycling of old lead acid, nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride, and lithium ion batteries, as well as alkaline batteries, through its Batteries Plus Recycling Program. Last year alone, Batteries Plus recycled more 27 million pounds of Lead Acid batteries and more than 850,000 pounds of all other chemistries. In addition to CFLs, Batteries Plus also accepts the following light bulbs at their store locations, fluorescent tubes, U-bend/Circline, Metal Halide, High Pressure Sodium, Mercury Vapor, Plastic Coated/Shattershield and ballast.  Ballasts contain PCBs that can harm the environment and should be properly recycled. Batteries Plus is a recycling partner with Battery Solutions Inc., an EPA approved mass quantity recycling handler that offers companies and consumers an easier way to recycle batteries. The franchise participates in EPA approved methods of recycling in full compliance with all federal, state, EPA, and DOT regulations governing the disposal of rechargeable batteries.
