South County Residents Spreading Awareness of Proposed Coal Ash Landfill

More South County residents and the Sierra Club are getting involved to spread awareness of Ameren’s intention to build a coal ash landfill near Rogers Elementary School.

The coal waste depository is proposed at Ameren Missouri's Meramec Energy Center—located just over a mile from the Mehlville School District elementary school.

Last week one Rogers parent asked the district’s Board of Education to take a stance on the proposed landfill.

Concerned residents are learning more about the proposed landfill and impacts of burning coal from the Missouri Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign organizer. Sara Edgar led an informational meeting for residents in Oakville this Tuesday; she said she it won’t be the only meeting she hosts on the topic.

A community forum is planned for March 27, and will include information on “opportunities to move to clean energy,” Edgar said.

“The landfill is really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the problems with the Meramec plant,” she said via email.

Some residents are planning to speak at the March 12 St. Louis County council meeting, in addition to writing letters to Councilman Steve Stenger and County Executive Charlie Dooley, she added.
